Brave New Voices

We have cable. One of my lifelines since I don't have a car and can venture only as far as my three year old is willing to walk (which isn't far).

I usually watch children shows and family friendly movies. Something that is only natural when you have little kids. Lately however, I have discovered a powerful and moving show on HBO entitled Russell Simmons Brave New Voices. It chronicles teams of high school students as they compete in what is called slam poetry contests. Now they aren't slamming each other or minority groups or anything negative. They slam aspects of their life, their struggles, their fears and how they are rising above it and overcoming adversity.

As someone who used to write poetry regularly I have really enjoyed watching the learning and growth and self awareness that has come to these kids through their poetry. I'm not sure if you can watch episodes online. I imagine you could. I also would imagine that you could find some on YouTube. It is something that I would recommend checking out.
